Mission Statement

Reardan Memorial Library serves as a public information provider for our community, using traditional and innovative technology to encourage curiosity, free inquiry and lifelong learning in a friendly environment.

Objectives of the collection

The Library collection will be selected and maintained to enable each person to find the library material and information that she or he wants according to her or his own free choices. No material will be excluded because of the race, nationality, religion, gender, sexual orientation, political or social view of either the author or of the material. The collection taken as a whole will be an unbiased and diverse source of information representing as many viewpoints as possible. Selection of materials by the library does not mean endorsement of the contents or the view expressed in those materials.

The objectives of the Reardan Memorial Library as factors in selection are as follows:

  • To help people know more about themselves and their world
  • To supplement formal study and encourage informal self-education
  • To meet the information needs of the community
  • To stimulate thoughtful participation in the affairs of the community, the country and the world
  • To aid in learning and improving job-related skills
  • To assist the individual to grow intellectually and spiritually and to enjoy life more fully.

Selection of Materials

The selection of all library materials is as objective as possible. Good materials selection is based on a thorough knowledge of the community’s needs, resources and problems. In materials selection, popular demand is considered; however, materials must still be guided by consideration of merit, use and balance. Selection of materials is geared to the interest of the majority of the public served and not to specific academic needs or special interest groups. The budget will be expended in such a way that the various demands made upon it are proportionately served.

Gifts or donations

The library does not commit itself to accepting all donations of materials.

Material that is donated is subject to the selection criteria that apply to new purchases. Donated items may be added to the collection, sold, donated to other organizations, or disposed of. The library will provide upon request a receipt showing the date and number of pieces donated by format, but will not undertake an appraisal of the items.
